Patagonia Lithium Ltd has reported a major upgrade at its Formentera Lithium Brine Project in Argentina’s lithium triangle, with its estimated Lithium Carbonate Equivalent resource soaring by 319% to approximately 551,400 tonnes. The enhanced estimate reflects not only a marked increase in recoverable lithium—rising from 32,000 to 103,000 tonnes of lithium metal—but also improved technical parameters such as a 248% increase in specific yield (now at 11.85%) and a 13% boost in average lithium concentration (from 264 to 294 mg/L). The technical work underpinning this upgrade has been extensive. Four diamond drill holes have been completed, supported by robust downhole geophysical surveys using Borehole Magnetic Resonance, gamma logging, and detailed brine sampling. Notably, drilling results revealed exceptionally high lithium values, some exceeding 1,100 ppm in subsurface samples, while advanced packer and pumping tests have provided strong indications of healthy aquifer flow and permeability. The positive data further support the use of Ekosolve’s Direct Lithium Extraction technology, which has already demonstrated lithium recovery rates over 92% in pilot plant trials. The company’s ongoing exploration program, which includes plans for additional deep drilling to target high porosity zones and further delineate resource boundaries, adds to the overall potential of this strategic asset. With comprehensive geological, geophysical, and hydrological studies already in hand—supported by international technical expertise—the project is poised for continued upward resource revisions as further data become available. From a bullish perspective, the dramatic resource expansion and improved technical parameters suggest that Formentera is emerging as one of Argentina’s most promising undeveloped lithium assets. The high quality of the brine, supported by efficient extraction technology and robust pilot plant results, bodes well for a potentially lucrative operational phase as lithium prices trend upward. On the bearish side, however, significant uncertainty remains since the resource is still largely classified as Inferred, meaning that further drilling and validation, including confirmation of basement contacts and full hydrological modeling, are required before firm extraction economics can be confirmed. Investors should weigh the strong technical progress and promising short-term outcomes against the inherent risks associated with early-stage resource development.
